Before getting more in details about the Paediatric Series - Level 1 - Seminar 1, let's have an overview of the complete paedriatric series..

Level One is an in-depth review of general paediatrics.

Level Two is for specialist paediatrics content and is an advanced level.  You need to follow level one before you can access level two.

Level One 2022-2023

Presents a series of 4 linked 2-day weekends covering an osteopathic approach from infants to young adults.

These seminars are highly evidence based, embedded in osteopathy philosophy and theory, et are contemporary and will enable attendees to immediately apply a range of practical and clinical dynamics in a range of children.

The scientific basis of the seminars introduces physiology, neuroscience, developmental and functional anatomy and gives insights into infant communication, self-regulation, growth, bonding, movement and agency.  It then continues looking at the dynamics of the older baby and toddler, through school age and into young adulthood.

These are comprehensive and detailed lectures that include video explanations of approaches and gives guidance on examination, assessment and clinical analysis.  They are a critical appraisal of current and historical approaches, and is NOT based on Sutherlands Involuntary Mechanism, but in Still and Littlejohn’s structure-function balancing and applied therapeutics.

Level Two 2023-2024

3 specialist seminars, focusing on infant feeding and tongue tie; on development, neurotypical and neurodiverse dynamics and primitive reflexes; and on the paediatric skeleton, intraosseous, endocrine and immune dynamics, speech, language, EENT and occlusion.

These specialist level seminars are for more experienced practitioners, who are ready to immerse themselves int the complex world of applied osteopathy.

General schedule for each day of lectures/seminar (level one & level two):

1 hour 30 minutes talk, 30 mins break, 1 hour 30 mins talk, one hour break, 1 hour 30 mins talk, 30 mins break, 1 hour 30 mins talk.

Each day lectures (8 hours) will start at 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

A zoom link will be sent to the participants at least the day before the start of the webinar.

The webinar will be recorded and be accessible for further free viewing to the registered participants without expiration time.

LEVEL ONE SERIES:

Seminar One: webinar. Nov. 11 -12. 2022

From inside-out.  Intra-uterine dynamics, birth, transition and early infant care.

Covers:

From the intra-uterine phase, looking at the development of the sensory motor system, the foetal sense of self, the early musculoskeletal system, and communication in utero.  Looks at maternofoetal interaction, and implications for labour, delivery and transition.  Considers birth trauma, moulding, shock and introduces concepts for infant latch and feeding, for sleep, settling and emotions.

You will learn:

  • Essential elements of motor-sensory development in utero through the lens of maternofoetal interaction
  • The dynamics of skeletal development in utero and implications for moulding and motor patterning of the foetus.
  • How foetal movement patterns and reflexes influence the birth process
  • The dynamics of the birth process, forces and pressures on the infant, and implications for birth trauma and stress.
  • Elements of transition physiology, state regulation of the infant and concepts such as arousal and circadian rhythms, and central pattern generators.
  • Regulation of breathing and the vascular systems and the inter-relationships with balance, vestibular and proprioceptive functions.
  • Osteopathic assessment routines for infant care and therapeutic constructs.
  • Understanding the dynamics of unsettledness, ‘colic’, head shapes, moulding, general movements and initial primitive reflex
  • Understanding risk in manual medicine approaches
  • Red flag and referral indicators in early infant care, in the context of osteopathic practice.

Seminar Two: Webinar. Jan. 14-15. 2023

Growth and change – early development, movement, self-image, interoception and integration – how a child emerges from within.

CEUs earned: 1,2

Covers:

Motor sensory integration, and early movement dynamics.  Explores rhythms and pattern generators, and influence of vestibular system and cerebellum in movement planning.  Combines autonomics, arousal and agency with  motion planning and dysregulation.  Looks at intraosseous dynamics, periosteum, implication for osteopathic care and for movement dynamics. Considers head shapes, moulding, general movements, movement preferences and hip function.

You will learn:

  • Growing the infant nervous system and implications for movement
  • Moves beyond co-regulation and towards self-regulation, and looks at implications for emotional regulation and sense of self, and reflections in the myofascial system
  • The principles of assessment of movement that is simultaneous with physiology, monitoring of state regulation and considerations of fatigue / stress during osteopathic care
  • Understanding fluids in tissues in infants, and emergent circulatory pathways, and how this impacts your hands-on assessment
  • Considering trauma and sensory uncertainty in infant and child movement assessment
  • Considering how the child is communicating to you, and how you can ‘talk’ to the child – touch as communication and touch as safety and novelty and learning

Seminar Three: Webinar. Feb. 25-26. 2023

Paediatric visceral dynamics and the relationship to structure and function, integrating interoceptive, homoeostatic, endocrine immune, and microbiome dynamics.

CEUs earned: 1,2

Covers:

The stomatognathic system including ears, eyes, and oral function.  Also respiratory, general visceral / digestive, and dynamics of endocrine-immune function and emergence.  The infant and child diaphragm and how posture, movement and visceral function continue to be mutually emergent.

Looking at metabolic load, mechano-immunity and on exposure and interoception.  How metabolism and microbiome relate with hormonal dynamics, to lead to different challenges for different viscera at different times.

You will learn:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the developing visceral and endocrine immune systems
  • How paediatric visceral systems are different to adult systems
  • Palpatory challenges and paediatric anatomy compared to adult anatomy
  • Functions of the face, throat and ventral body
  • Considerations of early dentition and cranio-facial dynamics.
  • Links between the trigeminal system, vagus, central nervous system and implication for hands on care.

Seminar Four: Webinar. May. 20-21. 2023

Overview of primitive reflex integration, challenges with puberty, sports considerations on the young, and the dynamics of body image, agency, self-regulation and ongoing development.

Covers:

Overview of primitive reflex integration, challenges with puberty, sports considerations on the young, and the dynamics of body image, agency, self-regulation and ongoing development. Coming back to sympathetic regulation and how vagal integration emerges.

You will learn:

  • Body image and sense of self and implications for biomechanical and myofascial function
  • Body schema, learning and memory and implications for function and recovery.
  • Limitations within the paediatric skeleton and tissues, and implications for structural integrity and rehabilitation.
  • Limb-pelvic integration
  • Hand-eye coordination, and implications for gait, balance, and agency
  • Reviewing three dimensional osteopathic assessment, integrating osteopathic concepts and working to enable the person within to emerge.
